Callsign   Locator    24GHz      47GHz      Total

G8IFT/P    IO82Ql     493        156        649

G3ZTR/P    IO93PV     185         -         185

G3PHO/P seem to be the only one to make use of the rover scheme and does quite well as a result.  Does every (any) one else know about it? Please re-read the  Microwave Contest Rules to find out what the "Rover" concept is all about.

Once again there were no entries for the 76GHz band, in spite of known activity on the day.

Bad Points
Some people still cannot read the rules with regard to square multipliers - none claimed none counted !!!
Ditto sections, anyone entering the SINGLE section is regarded as being in the OPEN
One station caught adding the multiplied score to the basic score giving effectively an extra multiplier - GOTCHA !

Good points
Only one restricted entry GW3ATM/P, respectable even for open so included in the overall table.
You've been beaten at last Peter !
G3ZXO's result reads more like 144 MHz than 10 GHz!

Where was everyone else  and why was no one on 3.4 and 47GHz?
Who IS this Sheffield station that seems to win all the events these days?!
Make sure you put enough postage on the envelope. One entrant owes me the grand total of 26p …..  6p postage excess, 20p Post Office handling charge!!

Editor’s Comments:

Can someone give us a little competition please?! More logs are needed next time or these multiband contests could very well disappear … that’s a threat, not a promise!

Congratulations to Ian, G8IFT, who leads both the individual bands and the combined scores. Roy, G3FYX, had success on 76GHz but as the rules for this year do not include that band we can only list his score as above, Next year the 76GHz band will be included in the contest (which will be known as the Millimetre Band Contest)

The following operators were also known to have been active during this contest. Where are their log entries you might ask?

G0HNW/P, G3UYM/P, G3ZTR/P, G6UAJ/P, G8ACE/P, G8BKE/P

Other UK stations known to have 24GHz equipment, but who were not about during the contest, include G3GNR, G3LQR, G3NWU, G3PYB, G3UKV, G3WDG, G4CBW,  G4EQD, G4DDK, G4FCD, G4MAP, G4XHS, G6GXK, G8AGN, G8AYY, G8KMH, G8VOI and G0FDZ

“Apologies for absence” were received prior to the contest from G3UKV, G4DDK, G4KNZ and G7MRF so we will let them off! Had all these 25 unlisted callsigns appeared in the results table above it would certainly raise the esteem of the millimetre bands in the eyes of the general amateur public. So please send in your logs to Andy, G4JNT, next time (June contest).

Some interesting discussion took place on the 80 metre UK Microwave Net the day after this contest. It was felt by some that the 76GHz activity on the day took away operators from 24GHz, a band which really suffered this time. One station spent a great deal of time working on the higher band so that when he came back to the 2m talkback and tried to find 24GHz stations they had all gone home! It was then suggested that, for the millimetre band contests only, a “roll call” at 0900GMT on 144.175MHz should take place. Skeds could then be made for the rest of the day so that each band gets its fair share of operating time and those folk with, say, only 24GHz do not get pushed out of the picture. Perhaps we can try this on June 11th?

SUMMER 1999 MULTIBAND MICROWAVE CONTEST RESULTS

The Multiband Contests held in June and August encouraged no less than ONE entry for the first and THREE for the second event! This leaves both the adjudicator and this webmaster extremely disappointed to say the least. We know some of you were on holiday but the activity on those days is not reflected in the entries.  Last winter, a fair amount of time and public discussion went into preparing this and next year’s contest programme. You, the readers and operators, had the chance to voice suggestions at more than one Round Table meeting. The idea of multiband events was taken on board as a result of a number of you asking for them so where were you when it came to submitting logs?

There appears to be a breed of microwaver that wants contests to take place in order to generate sufficient band activity that he/she might have lots of stations to work. If you do not send in even a token check log then why have the contest in the first place? Would you rather have activity days instead? It would make things a lot easier for at least two of the Microwave Committee! It would then be a simple matter of saying that every fourth Sunday of the month was microwave activity day (as is every Monday evening at present … and how many turn up for that?!).

It is important for the microwave scene in the UK to be recognised as having a very active group of operators. If not,  we will see more and more of our bands being sliced up and shared out among commercial concerns. It has taken years to finally having our contest programme published in this year’s October RadCom. Please support us by sending in entries if you operate during those events.

If you have not sent in your 10GHz Cumulative and October All Bands logs to Andy, G4JNT, please do so right now….. he will stretch the deadline for them this once!

10GHz Trophy ~ May 1999

Entrants had some difference of opinion over whether radio conditions were above or below average, but there was reasonable activity and good weather all round and everyone seems to have enjoyed the event.

The  10GHz trophy was won by the Parallel Lines Group, who established a clear lead over the field.

Webmaster's comments: It's the first time that we have these Trophy results adjudicated by the RSGB VHF Committee. They will be doing the same each year from now on. The rest of the UK Microwave Contests will be adjudicated by Andy, G4JNT, as normal.
It's nice to see the odd new callsign in the logs. Many congratulations to the G4LIP/P group and of course to all who entered logs.

Band winners are G3FYX/P (24GHz) and G7MRF/P (47GHz). A combined band score is included for interest but the contest is a separate band affair.

G8ACE/P sent in a log but unfortunately did not include sufficiently accurate location and time information for scoring purposes. It has been used as a checklog.

Well done to everyone..

Notes
G8VOI entered the Open section, even though his 800mW would have allowed a Restricted Section
entry. He claims 10GHz activity down due to the multiband events in June/August and due
to the rescheduled dates, away from the last Sunday of the month.
G3UKV claimed the triple points wideband bonus for a number of ATV contacts, some of which
gave worthwhile point totals for the mode.
There were few comments on rules and dates so we assume most people are happy!
Conditions were very average to flat most weekends.

EQUIPMENT USED BY CONTESTANTS:

All stations were using narrowband equipment, based on the DB6NT designs. The 35cm offset dish was the most popular used. G3PHO/P also had a 5mW wideband FM transceiver available in addition to his DB6NT Mk2 narrowband transverter. G8AYY/P (see list below) was wideband only.

COMMENTS:

GW0IVA - Highlight was working GM7MRF/P at 183km, ..... several attempts before a two way was possible

G3PHO - Northern activity good. Southern very poor. Used the "rover" method... 112 miles around Peak National Park!

G3UYM - Very disappointing, 170 mile round trip for this!

G4BRK - Very poor activity.

OTHER STATIONS KNOWN TO BE ACTIVE DURING THE CONTEST:

G4CBW/P (IO83RP), G4XHS/P (IO83RP), G8AYY/9 (IO93AD), GW3FNQ/P (Anglesey), G8ACE/P (IO91GI),

G4GRU/P (near Macclesfield).

These plus the entries above make a grand total of 12 stations out during the day. Entries from these others would have been very welcome!

G4JNT's  (Adjudicator) comments - The title is 24 and 47 GHz contest, have I lost the 47 results then?!!

COMMENTS:

The FOUR stations listed above are congratulated on their achievements,
for reaching the positions they did and for submitting their entries. Where
where all the others known to be active during the day. Some THIRTY UK stations
are known to have been active on 10GHz that day but most have not bothered to
send in even check logs to the contest adjudicator.

This contest is an all bands affair and as such is scored to reflect that.
Notes how the raw score positions differ to the final, normalised results.

CONTEST ADJUDICATOR'S COMMENTS:

The results of the JUNE 1998 ALL BANDS MICROWAVE CONTEST are shown in the table above. There were so few entries that I initially lost them under an 0805 surface mount resistor!! When I eventually found them I was able to score them on a single “Post It” note....such was the very poor support for a contest that all and sundry asked for last year!

Congratulations to all THREE entrants, both for their results and their support for the event.

The results are shown both in raw score form (points per km) and in a ‘normalised’ version where the leading score becomes 1000 points and others are scaled to it. There are too few entries for this method to be very meaningful but notice how the rank order of total normalised scores differs to the raw score totals. It is interesting to note that had, say, G3PHO/P made the only contact on 47GHz, he would then have become overall winner, pipping G8VOI/P by 6 points, even it that contact had only been over 1 kilometre! Under the contest rules, the normalised scores are the ones that count.

Where were the rest of you? The middle band entrants logs included callsigns such as G0HNW/P, G3KEU/P, G3LQR, G1JRU and G4BCH/P yet none of these sent in even a check log. Where were all those working 47GHz stations? Where were the 23cm operators? Various comments have been received regarding other “pressing” commitments on the day ... eg the Longleat rally, the Grand Prix motor race, football, etc! The clash with Longleat is an acceptable excuse but have you heard of video recorders for the others? Do you really want to watch TV instead of doing microwaves?

Apathy as shown in this poor turn out does not send the right signals to others who may have thoughts of entering “our” section of this fine hobby. Let’s have some real support for the rest of the contest season...

MAY 1998 RSGB 10GHz TROPHY CONTEST

The number of entries is still poor, considering the number of stations on, but probably reflects the very poor conditions. The Northern Lights, G0EMG/P, (as would a few others) would have a better score if they'd read the rules on calculation of multipliers but as it is they will have to accept the lower placing.

G0API, who forgot to put in his entry, would have come second but he refused to let me take it in as a late entry as  it was his 'stupid mistake' forgetting to send them. Pity really, the only home station coming second!

Notes: The scores were calculated using the following formula:

Claimed points per km x postcode multiplier x country multiplier = final score

POS.CALLSIGN LOCATION TOTAL KM   POSTCODES   COUNTRIES     FINAL SCORE
1   G3ZME/P IO82QL     4055         24         2             194640
2   G8VOI/P IO90MX24   2277         14         2              63756

4   G4LIP/P JO01QD     3518         13        --              45734 **
5   G3JMB/P JO01BB14   1849         10         2              36980
6   G4BCH/P IO90JO     2008         15        --              30120 **
7   G0MJW/P IO91IN     2048         12         1              24576
8   G0IVA/P IO93AD     2250         10         1              22500 **
9   G3PHO/P IO93PW37   2050          9         1              18450
10  G8FFM/P IO91RU      513          2         1               1026
11  G4BRK/P JO01QD      206          3         1                618
12  G8AYY/P IO93AF       94          1         1                 94
The number of entries is low in spite of some 30 stations or so being active on 3cm and even though the contest ran in parallel with an RSGB 432 Up contest.

Most stations complained about the appalling conditions. Both 10GHz and 144MHz were in poor shape North/South. A number of previously proven paths did not work.

Only one adverse comment on multiplier system from G8VOI who thought the postcodes were 'silly'.

The stations marked ** did not read the rules about multiplying multipliers and just used countries plus postcodes. Their total therefore is just the claimed score!! Read the rules next time.....

Needless to say, the table would look rather different otherwise. Those who would have a  reduced score because of this error HAVE been corrected. G3ZME considered the multiplication of countries by districts to be unfair and gives too much weighting  to the number of countries worked.

G0API (Home station) "FORGOT" to send in his entry. It would have been :
G0API  IO80XS77   2504   15   2    75120

This score would have given him second place!! John let me (G4JNT) know by phone, but did not try to even persuade me to accept the late entry as "It wouldn't be fair" not to enforce the time limit. What's more, it was the only home station entry.

G3PHO's score was reduced by 0.1 point for trying to claim fractional points!

COMMENTS :

G8VOI - Cold/Wet/Windy lousy! More people should take 10 GHz along to align dishes.

G3UYM- Short paths worked well, long paths to Hope Mountain failed but were worked last  year.
G3PHO- Poor weather conditions... thick mist in morning and torrential rain in late afternoon.  The little DB6NT barefoot mixer worked a treat with only 200 microwatts o/p.  Worked Alport Height to Broadway path for first time... no go on wideband with 50mW but 539 on cw with 200uW !

ALL THE STATIONS ABOVE USED NARROWBAND MODES (SSB/CW)

ADJUDICATOR'S COMMENTS:

There was confusion amongst several operators as to how many sessions to use for scoring. Where necessary the results were adjusted for the best of four sessions. I hope that those stations who only sent in logs for three events were active  only in them. ALL logs should be sent in, not just those of the best four sessions. It is interesting to note that in all but one case, the position in the results table is not affected by the locator squares bonus points. There could be two reasons for this:

1) Everyone moved around to optimise their squares worked

2) The number of squares is related to the general distance and number of stations worked and therefore does not work as a separate independant bonus, more as a non linear expansion of the points

A few comments about scoring. Could everyone please provide a summary of points in each and every session BEFORE adding bonus points. Then add the bonus points and make it clear which is which.

Unlike the VHF contest committee I am not interested in files of the .LOG format, "ESPECIALLY" "IF" "EVERY" "ENTRY" "IS"  "SURROUNDED" "BY" "INVERTED" "COMMAS". Plain text files, or of course the only good microwave scoring programme, are preferred.  I can read just about any format by using a spreadsheet to convert, but when text has to be changed to numbers, I am not a happy scorer!

24 GHz Cumulative 1996

Unlike the 10GHz contest above, the locator squares multiplier does not apply to this event. However, for interest's sake, the effect of this bonus has been shown in the table  below to show its influence if the rule were introduced. These are shown in brackets.

The first total column is used for ranking this year.

CALLSIGN        APR    MAY   SEP    OCT     TOTAL  (BONUS)  TOTAL

1. G(W)4KNZ/P   223    607   308             1220   1000    2200

2. G3FYX/P       70    590   385    245      1138   1500    2638

3. G3PHO/P      240    532   169              941    750    1691

4. G3UYM/P       45    351   121              517    750    1267

5. G8AYY/P       80     28    67              175    750     925

Congratulations to the leading stations. Once again, activity and contest entries were under par. With the advent of narrowband there hopefully should be a marked increase in 24GHz activity in 1997.

In the table above, G3PHO/P and G8AYY/P used wideband FM equipment only. The rest used either narrowband exclusively or mixed narrow/wide.
