UK MICROWAVE CONTEST
RESULTS 2001
2001
RSGB
10GHz Cumulatives 2001
A total of 13 entries were received for the 2001 10GHz cumulatives
- 8 in the open section and 5 in the restricted section. This
compares to a total of 8 entries in 2000, and despite the Foot
& Mouth restrictions on using some portable sites in the earlier
part of the year.
In the Open section, congratulations to G3PHO/P,
who leads with a convincing score, due in part to very good
scores for the July and August events. In July, 33 stations were
worked, best DX 572km, and in August, 29 stations were worked,
best DX 585km. Peter was using a 5W PA and 1.3dB NF receiver,
mounted behind a 1.2m diameter dish at 3m agl, also 50W talkback
on 2m with an 8 element Yagi. The runner-up in the open section
was G4ZXO/P.
In the Restricted section (max 10GHz power of 1W),
congratulations to G8LSD/P, who narrowly beats GW3ATM/P,
due to tallying one extra locator for the multiplier. Allan was
using just under 1W to an 80cm dish, also mounted 3m above ground.
Some people cannot read the rules and did not score correctly!
The best 4 sessions should be counted, muLtiplied by the total
number of squares worked over the entire cumulative. Some people
only counted the squares worked in the best 4 sessions. Some people
did not state whether they wished to enter the Open or Restricted
session - in which case, they were entered according to the output
power they declared they were using (but if in doubt, in the Open
section).
There were no entries for the Wideband only section in
2001.
A check log is acknowledged from G3XDY, who was not
able to be active in all the sessions.
Finally, the dates for 2002 are now published and
the rules are unchanged. Lets hope we see some good activity on
10GHz, and please do send in your entry, even if you can only
make one or two of the sessions.

OCTOBER
2001 ALL MICROWAVE BANDS CONTEST
The weather was very
poor, gales and heavy rain, which led to poor activity and only a
handful of portable stations out. Only two entries were received -
G3PHO/P (Houndkirk Moor, IO93EH) and the South Birmingham RS operating
as G8IFT/P and G3OHM/P on the Lickey Hills near Birmingham. |

On 24GHz, the rain was put
to good use, the two stations working each other over a 108km badly
obstructed path, by rainscatter.By virtue of being operational on
all bands from 1.3 to 24GHz, the South Birmingham group won easily.
To see the effort put into each band, here is a summary of the equipment
in use:
1.3GHz - 130W / 8x 23
ele at 10m agl
2.3GHz - 30W / 1.2m dish
at 7m agl
3.4GHz - 30W / 1.2m dish
at 8m agl
5.7GHz - 15W / 1.2m dish
at 8m agl
10GHz - 15W / 1.2m
dish at 3m agl
24GHz - 0.3W / 0.3m
dish at 3m agl
Their efforts /P, especially
under not very good conditions, are appreciated.
G3PHO, with an entry on
4 of these 6 bands, entered quite a respectable score, as a single
operator, and was band leader on 10GHz.
A check log was received
from G3XDY.

Steve Davies G4KNZ.

There was good activity in this event, despite
being a very windy day,
the best mm activity of the year so far. A total
of 14 stations were active.
Adjudicating the 24GHz event was difficult,
with the top two stations,
G3PHO/P and G4BRK/P, very close. Initially,
G3PHO had claimed
fewer points due to an error totalling up his
score. Correcting this put
G3PHO slightly ahead, before checking the distances
(and points)
claimed. Working from just the locators in the
entry logs, G4BRK
came out 1 point ahead, whereas using knowledge
of most stations
actual exact location put G3PHO slightly ahead
again. In the end,
the adjudicator decided the fairest option was
to award 1st equal to
both stations!
On 24GHz, most stations were using a
PA, running up to 0.5W, and
this firstly made the contacts easier and quicker,
and secondly allowed
one or two more difficult (non Line-of-Sight)
contacts to be made.
G3PHO/P also made use of the rover rule, allowing
a second contact
with G0HNW/P, after having moved more than 16km.
On 47GHz, there was less activity -
6 stations logged as being active.
G4KNZ lead on this band, working two stations
(90, 85km).
On 76GHz, activity was confined to the
South, with 3 stations logged
active: G8ACE/P, G8BKE/P, and G3PYB. This band
was won by
G8ACE, with 2 contacts.

AUGUST
2001 ALL BAND MICROWAVE CONTEST
Here are the results, first an overall table,
based upon normalized scores and then the individual band tables.
Some comments from the adjudicator, G4KNZ:
With the help of email reminders, a total of
8 stations were persuaded to send in logs, of which 6 operated on
more than one band. Thanks to all those who sent in entries - they
help to build up a picture of activity - and even those with more
modest scores have worked stations which would otherwise have been
missed. All logs received are included in the tables.
There was good activity on 1.3, 5.7 and 10GHz.
For example, on 10GHz, some 30 narrowband stations were logged active
in a total of 13 squares, plus a further 10 stations running TV
on the band.
On 1.3GHz and 5.7GHz, it was a close run competition
between G4BRK and G3PHO/P, with G4BRK managing to finish top on
both bands. On 10GHz, the competition was between G3PHO/P and G3ZME/P,
with G3PHO/P finishing in the lead, despite G3ZME/P gaining quite
a number of points from 10 QSOs with TV stations.
Activity on 2.3GHz, 3.4GHz and 24GHz was disappointing.
There were just two entrants on 2.3GHz, and G4BRK picked up an easy
1000 points on this band. There were no entries at all on 3.4GHz!
On 24GHz, again there were only two entrants, both working just
each other (G3PHO/P and G3ZME/P) - all that remained for the adjudicator
here was to equalise the distances claimed, so both stations were
first equal. Maybe we can have more competition on these bands next
time?
Overall winner was G3PHO, who was active on 4
bands (and leader on 2 bands), with G4BRK just a little way behind,
also active on 4 bands in the contest (and leader on 3 bands).
NB: Most of the logs were received electronically,
which is easier for
the adjudicator (acknowledgements can be sent,
if required).

Some comments from the adjudicator, G4KNZ:
With the help of email reminders, a total of 10 stations were
persuaded to
send in logs, of which 7 operated on more than one band. Thanks to
all
those who sent in entries - they help to build up a picture of activity
-
and even those with more modest scores have worked stations which
would
otherwise have been missed. All logs received are included in the
tables.
There was good activity on 1.3, 2.3, 5.7 and 10GHz, for example,
with
some 42 stations logged active on 10GHz in a total of 16 locator squares.
On 1.3GHz and 2.3GHz, G3XDY leads by a large margin. On 5.7GHz and
10GHz, there was somewhat more competition, but G3PHO managed to
finish at the top of both of these tables.
Activity on 3.4GHz and 24GHz was disappointing - so much so
that
the only entrant on each of these bands were able to earn themselves
1000 points with just 1 or 2 contacts. Please try and give them some
competition next time!
Overall winner was G3PHO, who was active on 4 bands, with
G3XDY
just a little way behind, being active only on 3 bands in the contest.
NB: Most of the logs were received electronically, which is
