MICROWAVE UPDATE
27-30 September 2001

THURSDAY 27 SEPTEMBER:
AFTERNOON VISIT TO THE STANFORD DISH

WA6KBL makes some checks on the 23cm EME gear at the operating position. The tracking console is just visible to the left.

David,G6GXK, enjoyed his chance to sit at the tracking console.

Sam, G4DDK (left) together with John, WD4MUO (in bright blue shirt) and Ed Cole, AL7EB (carrying his SLR camera) look on the operating position, waiting for the EME contacts to start.

The 23cm EME tests begin and a "pile-up" results! Received signals, including the station's own moon echoes were very impressive. 'Normal' RST reports were able to be exchanged rather than the more usual M and O type reports used with weaker signals. It sounded more like 20 metres than 23cm EME!

Unfortunately the signals reports sent to the Stanford station were lower than expected and later it was confirmed that only 20 watts was being radiated, due to a fault in the system at the feed end.

In the rear room of the building we found Dave, WW2R (also known as G4FRE), admiring the 70cm klystrons used for the early EME tests decades ago. A pair of these were combined to give lots kilowatts on that band!

This one puts my little 723A/B klystron into perspective!
