MICROWAVE UPDATE
27-30 September 2001

THE PEOPLE YOU MEET AT MICROWAVE UPDATE

Update is where you put the faces to the names. As in any hobby there are well-known personalities whose names appear in magazines or who are heard on the air doing marvellous things! You meet these folk at Update! You also find that they are not much different to yourself... they are enthusiastic AMATEUR RADIO MICROWAVERS. I have found all the ones I have met to be most friendly and very helpful with advice and information. Here are a few of the people I met this year ...

This very friendly fellow is Chuck Houghton. WB6IGP. He's the guy who got you your Qualcomm 1 watt amp for 10GHz! He has lots of surplus parts and p.c. boards for disposal and had a nightly session in his room selling useful items to anyone who cared to come along.

Chuck has been extremely helpful to the UK microwave fraternity. There can't be many of us who have not modified that 1 watt PA for 10GHz!

... Great to meet you Chuck!

There can't be many microwavers who have not heard of these two characters!

On the left is Tom, WA1MBA, a great experimenter and originator of his microwave emailing list.

Paul Wade, W1GHZ, the antenna man, is on the right. He needs no introduction ... just type his callsign in any Internet search engine and see what I mean!

"Mr Moonbounce" himself, Jim Vogler, WA7CJO is seen here on the left talking to well-known Californian microwaver, Chip Angle, N6CA.

If you hanker after getting going on 10GHz EME then listen for WA7CJO. If you can't hear him then your gear is not working properly!

On the left is Dieter Doerfler, DJ4AM, co-holder of the world 10GHz DX record, talking things over with Alan Avery, VK2AXA. Here are two microwavers from opposites sides of the world finding common ground halfway ..in California, USA.

Your webmaster, G3PHO, only realised here at Update that he had actually spoken to Alan before (on 10GHz!) way back in 1993 during a holiday in Australia, when he went on a 3cm portable trip with Lyle, VK2ALU. Alan was on the other end of the 10GHz path between Saddleback, near Wollongong, NSW and Sydney,NSW, Australia.

Wherever we go, we keep bumping into this character!

Those sunglass can't hide the fact that this is indeed WW2R, Dave Robinson. Originally G4FRE, Dave now lives and works in Texas. It's said he has a problem in that the native Texans can't understand a word he says, such is the strength of his English West Midlands accent!! We find that strange 'cos the Texan farewell "Y'all come back?" is not far off the English Midlands version, " Yowl cum back?"!
