Congratulations
to the winner, Peter, G3PHO/P, who operated portable from a variety
of sites and grid squares in the North. Peter was using a DB6NT
homebuilt transverter plus a 12W PA, to a 1.2m prime focus dish
at 2m above ground. Peters best DX was F1PYR/P at 620km, in
the May session. As leading operator in this contest, he will receive
the G3KEU Memorial Trophy at next years RAL Microwave Round
Table.
Although the
rules provided for two sections open and restricted
nobody marked their entry as being for the restricted section (0.5W
or less), and so all entries have been combined to the one section.
In 2005, there will be just one (open) section.
Entries were slightly lower than 2003, but this contest again proved
fairly popular, combined with the 10GHz cumulatives and this will
be repeated for 2005. As with 10GHz, thanks to a number of regular
European stations who have given much support throughout the year.
The best activity
periods were May, August and September, but there was much less
to choose between sessions, compared to 10GHz. Conditions were generally
average, perhaps slightly better propagation than on 10GHz. Steve

Congratulations
to the winner of the open section and the G3RPE Trophy, John G4EAT,
who won convincingly, due in the main to the large number of different
locator squares worked. Johns 10GHz home station comprised
a DB6NT transverter and a 10W solid-state PA, to a 60cm offset dish
mounted 20m above ground. Johns best DX was DJ5BV, at 435km,
in the July session.
Congratulations
to Allan G8LSD/P, the convincing winner of the restricted section.
As a result, he becomes the first microwaver to receive the G3JMB
Trophy (for which he is immensely proud, as Jack was his father-in-law).
Allan only managed four operating periods this year, from Chanctonbury
Hill on the South coast but this was sufficient! Allan was running
just under 1W to an 80cm prime focus dish tripod mounted at 3m above
ground.
In both sections, the number of locator squares worked was a major
factor in determining ones position in the results table.
For example, in the open section, positions 3 to 9 all have a similar
points score, and are separated by the multiplier ranging
from 11 to 18.
A good number
of entries was received for both sections, a similar number to 2003
(when there was also a total of 20 entries). The combination with
5.7GHz appeared to worked well again and this arrangement will continue
in 2005. There was very good support from Europe, with quite a number
of French, Dutch and Belgian stations worked.
As per 2003, there were no entries again for the wideband-only section
(100mW or less) and this will now be discontinued in 2005.
The best scores
were achieved in the August session, with almost every participant
active in this session, and some good DX worked by some stations
- for example, G3PHO/P worked 657km to near Paris. The only poor
day in the series was October, when quite a few stations were not
QRV and propagation was markedly poor.
Propagation rarely
rose above the mediocre in all events.

Congratulations
to the overall winner, Peter G3PHO, who made good use of the rover
rules, operating from up to 3 sites in one day. Peter's equipment
consists of a homebuilt transverter, with a 2W PA, and a 60cm offset
dish with pyramidal horn feed. Best DX was a rainscatter contact
with Harold G3UYM over 154km in the April session.
The highest activity
was in September, when the weather was excellent, being hot and
sunny. The activity in all sessions was almost exclusively portable.
From the logs
received, a total of 15 stations were active overall, the same number
as in 2003. The move to 24048MHz has left a few stations behind
(your adjudicator included) who have not yet got around to moving
frequency and were unable to participate; hopefully this will be
rectified in 2005! Thanks to all those who sent in entries, even
if only for one session.

Congratulations
to the overall winner, Peter G3PHO, who entered the 47GHz events
for the first time. Peter's equipment consists of a DB6NT-based
system, with 22mW transmitter and a 35cm offset dish with a dual
horn feed for separate TX/RX.
As per 24GHz, the highest activity was in September. From the logs
received, a total of 7 stations were active overall. Thanks to all
those who sent in entries, even if only for just one session. This
year, the 24GHz and 47GHz cumulatives reverted to being run concurrently
and this was generally well received. Often the same dish is used
for both bands, and 24GHz is often used to align the dish before
a 47GHz contact is attempted, so this combination works well.
A similar format has been kept for 2005, but running on consecutive
months (July, August, September and October).

There
were 10 entries, 6 fixed stations and 4 portable.There
seemed to be a few more stations about than last year, but conditions
were either average or poor, depending on where you were.
Neil
G4BRK was the leader on two bands, and also the overall winner.
Neil was running 200W on 23cm to a 35 ele Yagi, and 30W on 13cm
to an 80cm dish, from IO91DP. Neil worked a few Dutch stations on
23cm,
and just the one 13cm, describing conditions as 'nothing special'.
Peter
G3PHO/P was second overall, and the leader on 3.4GHz, operating
from Houndkirk Moor IO93EH, with 23cm (18W to 23 ele Tonna) and
9cm (15W to 1.2m dish). Peter found conditions quite poor, not being
able to work
outside England on either band, and the weather consisted of strong
winds and low cloud on Houndkirk.
Thanks
to everyone who sent in an entry. A similar event is scheduled for
November - lets hope for a little more activity next time - and
please send in your entry, however small!
G6XDI
commented that this contest might be better held on the first weekend
in March, when much of Europe runs a contest covering bands to 10GHz
and above (the RSGB has just 144/432MHz). Any comments on whether
that would be a good idea for 2005 or not would be welcome.

Congratulations
to the winner of the open section, Peter G4ZXO/P, who narrowly
beat
G3PHO/P and G4BRK to win the G3RPE Trophy. Peters 10GHz
station comprised a DB6NT transverter, DB6NT 10W PA, and G3WDG preamp,
to a 75cm dish mounted 5m above ground. Talkback comprised 150W
to a 7 element yagi on 2m. Peter operated from Ditchling beacon
and was QRV in all events.
Congratulations
to Allan G8LSD/P, winner of the restricted section. Allan only managed
3 operating periods this year, from different sites along the South
coast, but this was sufficient! Allan was running just under 1W
to an 80cm dish.
A good number of entries was received for both sections, up from
2003 (when there were a total of 15 entries). Many stations commented
that the combination with 5.7GHz worked well, and were keen to see
this arrangement continue in 2004. There was very good support from
Europe, with quite a number of French, Dutch and Belgian stations
worked.
The best scores
were achieved in the June session, and Neil G4BRK remarked this
day provided the best conditions he had ever seen in a 10GHz contest.
Some good DX was worked on this day, with a number of contacts over
500km, including a contact of 959km between G8OHM/P and F1DBE. The
only poor day in: the series was October, when quite a few stations
were not QRV, and propagation was markedly poor.

Results of the 5.7GHz
Cumulatives:
Congratulations to the
winner, Jim G4WYJ/P, who won the G3KEU MEMORIAL TROPHY
with a significant lead, due in part to the excellent number of
squares worked. Jim was using a DB6NT transverter and amplifier
mounted at the 80cm dish, running 6W output.
This new contest proved fairly popular, with a number of comments
received on how this has stimulated activity on the band. Again,
as with 10GHz, thanks to a number of regular European stations to
have given much support throughout the year. The best activity periods
were June and September, while October was the worst, with very
poor conditions and low activity.
General
The standard of logs received on both bands was fairly good, but
a common error being (in a few instances) careless logging of callsigns
especially whether portable or not and of locators.
The rules omitted to mention
that the squares multiplier would be applied, as in previous years
on 10GHz, but all entrants did include the multiplier (which was
the intention)! One point arose, whether to claim a square multiplier
for a one-way contact this affected several stations. The
adjudicator felt there should be some reward, and after some deliberation,
the full square was allowed. Whatever the decision, it would not
have changed the overall winner for either contest/section.
On 10GHz, 13 out of the 20 logs were received by email in electronic
format, while on 5.7GHz, 8 of the 11 logs were by email. Electronic
formats varied, the easiest for the adjudicator being Excel or Word,
while the output from some contest programs is less convenient (when
it is simply printed, along with any odd graphics etc).
Some issues were raised
relating to talkback, which were also discussed at Martlesham round
table.
- The use of mobile phones
there was some reservation about their use at all expressed
by one entrant the consensus at the round table was that
their use was OK but should only be used to establish initial
contact, and not for exchange of contact details.
- The use of the ON4KST.com
chat room this seems to be replacing 144MHz as the preferred
talkback for microwave home stations again, there is no
objection to its use to establish initial contact, but bear in
mind that portable stations typically will not have access to
this.
Other than the clarification
already mentioned about the multiplier, the intent is to keep the
same rules for 2004, and three out of six sessions seems ideal for
scoring on both bands. Please note that you can still enter the
contest if you operate in less than 3 sessions and the more
logs received, the better the picture of activity that can be built
up (check logs are also welcome).

CUMULATIVE CONTEST - 2003 |
 |
Congratulations to the
overall winner, Peter G3PHO, who made good
use of the rover rules, operating from up to 4 sites in one day.
Peter's
equipment consists of a homebuilt transverter, with a 2W PA, and
a
35cm offset dish mounted 8ft above ground.
From the logs received,
a total of 15 stations were active overall. It
would have been nice if a few more could have sent in an entry,
or even
just a check log.
The highest activity was
in July, when the weather was excellent,
being hot and sunny, but the downside was the high humidity meant
some paths were more difficult to work than usual.
Several operators commented
that the timing of the 3 sessions was
not optimum, especially the August event - when there was minimal
activity due to holidays and clashes with other activities. Another
suggestion was to revert back to separately scored events rather
than
a cumulative.

Conditions were
around average during the early stages of this contest although
there was a little rain scatter around, and some very unpleasant
windy weather at some sites. Telford & DARS went QRT very early
having been blown off the hill but made many a large number of QSOs
while they were on the band - many on wideband ATV. Later in the
contest conditions improved somewhat across the North Sea, and John
Wood, G4EA, was able to take good advantage of this to just edge
the South Birmingham RS out of first place.

This
contest aimed to encourage home station operation on the three lowest
bands in the amateur microwave allocation, though portable entries
were equally welcome. There were 6 entries,
3 fixed stations and 3 portable. Activity levels were quite good on
all bands in the UK - it is a pity more stations did not send in an
entry. John
G3XDY was the leader on all 3 bands, and also the overall winner.
John reports good conditions into Germany from his East coast (JO02)
location at the start of the contest, which helped considerably -
a number of German stations were worked on all three bands. John was
running 250W to 4x23 ele on 23cm, 50W to 0.6m dish on 13cm, and 15W
to 0.6m dish on 9cm. Runner
up was Neil G4BRK, also operating from home, followed by Peter G3PHO/P
operating from Houndkirk Moor. In contrast to the E. Coast, both Neil
and Peter report quite flat conditions from Wiltshire and Yorkshire.
There is a
similar event scheduled for 30th November - lets hope for good activity
again, and this time, please send in your entry!
Regards,
Steve Davies G4KNZ.
